Canada's Crypto Rules Spark Foreign Acquisition
The Canadian crypto landscape has proven to be challenging for many companies, according to WonderFi Technologies' founder Karia Samaroo. In an op-ed piece, Samaroo explained that navigating Canada's demanding and fragmented securities framework led his company to accept a C$250 million acquisition offer from Robinhood.
WonderFi was once Canada's largest crypto platform, with over 300,000 funded customers and more than C$2 billion in client assets under custody. However, the regulatory environment proved too costly for some companies to operate within.
Samaroo noted that each province and territory in Canada maintains its own securities framework, making it difficult for companies to expand coast-to-coast. This fragmentation drove up compliance costs, which ultimately led several international platforms to exit the market rather than comply with the regulations.
For Robinhood, acquiring WonderFi provided an instant foothold in Canada, complete with a regulatory-compliant operation and a significant customer base. The deal has pushed Robinhood past 1 million international funded customers.
