Canada's Growth Ceiling: Why Businesses Like WonderFi Exit

Karia Samaroo, founder and former CEO of WonderFi, reflects on the sale of his company to Robinhood for C$250 million. He acknowledges the concerns from Canadian regulators about foreign ownership but believes that blocking the deal wouldn't address the underlying issues driving businesses away.

Samaroo built WonderFi in 2021, bringing together top talent and technology, building a national brand, and consolidating Canada's fragmented crypto market. Despite surviving Quadriga's collapse and FTX's bankruptcy, the company reached its growth ceiling due to weaker business investment, thinner growth capital, declining public markets, and complex regulation.

Canada's restrictive business climate is compounded for crypto companies by an overly demanding regulatory regime, which has scared off global exchanges like Binance, OKX, Bybit, and Gemini. The inefficient system of securities regulation has raised financing costs, complexity, and deterred investors.
