Canada's Stablecoin Framework Brings Clarity, But Can CAD Tokens Compete with USD?
Canada has established a clearer regulatory framework for stablecoins, giving issuers a more defined route to operate in the country. The legislation, which has received Royal Assent and is expected to launch in 2027, covers fiat-backed stablecoins made available to Canadians regardless of their tracked currency.
The framework requires issuers to register with the Bank of Canada, maintain reserves equal to or greater than the value of outstanding stablecoins, and establish a published redemption policy. This addresses concerns around the reliability of redeeming tokens at face value.
While regulation is only the first hurdle for new tokens, it's uncertain whether Canadian-dollar stablecoins can compete with USD-backed stablecoins, which dominate global crypto trading due to their liquidity and widespread platform support.
