Cape Cod Scammers Use Bitcoin ATMs to Steal $30,000
Scammers on Cape Cod have stolen an estimated $30,000 from residents through a Bitcoin ATM scheme.
The scammers posed as Barnstable County Sheriff's Office employees and contacted victims by phone, claiming they had outstanding warrants for failed jury duty appearances or other related court proceedings.
Victims were coerced into sending the cryptocurrency through a Bitcoin ATM to clear up the supposed warrant, but authorities warn that law enforcement will never demand payment via cryptocurrency.
The Barnstable Police Department received reports of three separate incidents between August 22 and August 23, with the scammers using a specific address for the Bitcoin ATM machine.
