Cardano Bolsters Payments Integration via x402 Codebase
Cardano has secured significant payments integration after its native support was included in the official x402 codebase.
The implementation, contributed by Cardano Foundation engineers, brings Cardano directly into the open payment protocol's reference tooling. This allows developers building x402-based applications and AI agents to use Cardano through standardized infrastructure also available for other supported networks.
x402 is an open payments protocol originally developed by Coinbase, which uses HTTP's long-dormant '402 Payment Required' status code to enable applications to request and make payments directly over the internet. The system is particularly relevant to autonomous AI agents since they can pay for APIs, data, computing resources, or other digital services.
The integration could potentially expand the number of applications capable of accepting payments settled on Cardano. Developers building x402 applications no longer have to start with an independent Cardano implementation, as native support provides standardized client and server components as well as examples that can be used as a starting point.
