Cardano Connects with Injective via IBC in Interoperability Push

Cardano has taken its first step towards broader interoperability by connecting with layer-1 blockchain Injective via an on-chain inter-blockchain communication (IBC) connection. The testnet integration, launched on August 4, allows users to send ADA from Cardano to Injective and move INJ from Injective to Cardano.

The implementation is considered a proof of concept rather than a commercial bridge, with the current version supporting only Cardano Preprod and the Injective testnet. The connection uses the IBC protocol structure, which locks ADA in escrow on the Cardano side and issues a corresponding IBC voucher when transferring assets.

The integration is significant not only because it's the first live case of Cardano's long-term interoperability strategy but also because it shows that different blockchain designs can communicate over the IBC protocol. The Cardano Foundation had to build separate infrastructure to align differences between Cardano's extended UTXO-based accounting model and Injective's account-based structure.

Injective is based on the Cosmos SDK and supports IBC by default, but this connection demonstrates that other blockchains can also be integrated with Cardano. The integration could allow ADA to be used across the broader Injective ecosystem and INJ to be used on Cardano once it moves into an operating environment.

The current testnet integration is just a starting point for Cardano's interoperability plans, which include connecting with more than 115 blockchains. Charles Hoskinson, Cardano's founder, announced a LayerZero integration in February 2026, and that work has already deployed a LayerZero endpoint smart contract on the Cardano network.
