Cardano Founder Weighs OpenAI's Math Breakthrough: 'Pretty Remarkable'
Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, has expressed surprise and admiration for OpenAI's recent breakthrough in formal mathematics. In an interview on September 9, Hoskinson stated that artificial intelligence had advanced further than he expected in this area.
The breakthrough in question is OpenAI's solution to the Navier, Stokes Millennium Prize Problem. The company claims that its internal system produced a proposed solution after coordinating roughly 10,000 agents and working for 88 hours. This solution was then formalized and checked by GPT-6 Astra over an additional 17 hours.
Hoskinson has a personal connection to formal mathematics research, having donated $20 million to Carnegie Mellon University in 2021 to establish the Hoskinson Center for Formal Mathematics. He also emphasized the importance of considering confidentiality when using centralized cloud AI services, highlighting concerns about researchers' private work being used without their consent.
