Cardano Governance Deadline Shifted to September 6, Network Standstill Looms

Cardano's self-governance is hanging in the balance as a crucial deadline approaches. The exact date of this deadline has been misreported, with many sources citing September 1, 2026, but according to the Cardano blockchain itself, it falls on September 6, 2026, at around 21:45 UTC.

This deadline is tied to a governance action that must be ratified within six epochs. The current governance action, which was submitted in epoch 646 and has an expiry mark of epoch 653, still remains open as of August 27, 2026. Epoch 651 began on August 22, 2026, at 21:44:51 UTC, and an epoch lasts exactly five days.

The constitutional committee is responsible for checking whether a proposal is compatible with the Cardano constitution. If four of its seven seats expire in the same epoch as the renewal action lapses, the committee will shrink to three members, falling below the minimum size required by the protocol. This would prevent it from ratifying governance actions, effectively putting the network into a standstill.
