Cardano Governance Stalls as Committee Seats Expiration Looms
Cardano's governance framework is facing a critical deadline of September 1st, as four committee seats are set to expire. The Constitutional Committee has seven seats in total, and if only three remain, it would leave the network vulnerable to stalling most major on-chain governance decisions.
The four committee seats expiring at epoch 653 have been replaced with candidates elected through the 2026 process, but their new terms would end at epoch 799. This creates a timing constraint, as enacting the update cannot be done earlier while preserving those expiration dates.
According to Intersect, failure to renew the committee seats would reduce the committee from seven members to three, below the required minimum size of five. This would effectively stall Cardano governance until enough members are restored, preventing progress on areas including hard forks, protocol-parameter changes, and treasury withdrawals.
