Cardano Governance System Avoids Shutdown in Narrow Vote
Cardano's governance system narrowly avoided a shutdown after a close vote on September 6. The Constitutional Committee renewal, which was essential to maintain a quorum of five members, passed with 71.4% support from DReps and 56.3% support from stake pool operators (SPOs). This was just enough to cross the required thresholds of 67% for DRep support and 51% for SPO support.
The vote matters because four out of seven committee seats were set to expire on September 6, leaving only three active members. Without the renewal, Cardano's governance system would have been severely impaired, as it relies on the Constitutional Committee's approval for significant actions such as treasury withdrawals and hard fork initiations.
Cardano's Voltaire era introduced a token-weighted voting system, which has been criticized for encouraging apathy among voters. The close vote is seen as a warning sign that Cardano needs to improve its governance participation rates.
