Cardano Leios Testnet Shatters Mainnet Capacity
The Cardano crypto network has achieved significant improvements in throughput during its Leios testnet phase. The test, which ran for 41 days, handled six times the mainnet capacity and processed 18 times the number of transactions seen on real mainnet traffic.
Leios, an overlay on Ouroboros Praos, was designed to increase capacity without replacing the security model used by Cardano. It works by creating endorser blocks that can carry more transactions and validate them in parallel. Once enough stake has voted, a later Praos block carries a certificate that allows the wider batch to be accepted.
The test also included a red team effort to find weaknesses in the network. So far, these attacks have not threatened the safety of the Praos layer. Performance fell in line with the amount of stake involved rather than causing the chain to fail.
