Cardano Partners With Reef Data eG to Monetize Personal Data
The Cardano Foundation has announced a partnership with Reef Data eG, a cooperative that aims to monetize personal data. The partnership is backed by Hamburger Volksbank, ARIC, VALIO, and Disruptive Elements.
Reef plans to pool members' personal data, license it to businesses, and pay royalties back to contributors. Cardano's Reeve system will record payment flows and royalty distributions, while the underlying data remains off-chain.
This move is part of a growing trend in Europe, where data cooperatives are emerging as a way for individuals to control their personal data. Other initiatives include MIDATA Cooperative, Swash, DataVaults, and SalusCoop, each with its own approach to data sharing and compensation.
The success of Reef's model depends on the number of buyers it can attract, which in turn will determine the size of payouts to members. In a bear case scenario, payouts could be as low as $1.25 per year, while in a bull case scenario, they could reach up to $30 per year.
