Cardano Partnership Aims to Monetize Private Data with Royalty Payments
The Cardano Foundation has announced a partnership with Reef Data eG to monetize users' private data. The partnership, backed by several organizations, aims to pool members' personal data and license it to businesses, paying royalties back to contributors.
The European Commission Joint Research Centre identifies six models of data intermediary, including personal-information management systems, data cooperatives, and data marketplaces. Reef's model combines elements of these approaches, with a focus on commercialization and royalty payments.
The partnership uses Cardano's Reeve system to record payment flows and royalty distributions, keeping the underlying data off-chain. This architecture addresses concerns about GDPR rights such as erasure and correction, and allows for auditable records of transactions.
While the potential payouts are small, with a bear case estimate of $1.25 per member per year, Reef's contribution is to provide a public, tamper-evident record of who gets paid and how much, making a notoriously opaque data market more trustworthy.
