Cardano (ADA) is set to introduce its own version of Bitcoin's Lightning Network, known as Cardano Lightning. The new state channel architecture was presented during an August 24 livestream featuring PolyCrypto software engineer Ilja von Hoessle.

Von Hoessle explained that Cardano Lightning allows two parties to send and receive payments directly through bidirectional payment channels. Unlike Bitcoin's slow but secure main network, the Cardano Lightning system enables fast and low-cost transactions with the security of the underlying blockchain.

The real power of Cardano Lightning comes from connecting these channels into a network, allowing payment routing through multiple participants without requiring a direct channel between the sender and recipient.

Cardano Lightning is based on a fork of the Lightning Development Kit (LDK) Node, which provides the foundation for running Lightning nodes and managing liquidity. The system also includes a Rust-based relay that facilitates communication across the network and a Cardano smart contract acting as a liquidity manager.
