CAS Unveils AI-Driven Nuclear Energy Plan at WAIC
The Chinese Academy of Sciences has unveiled an ambitious plan to integrate artificial intelligence into every stage of the nuclear energy lifecycle, marking a significant step forward in the field. At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, researchers revealed a technical roadmap for weaving AI into subcritical nuclear setups that handle fuel breeding, spent-fuel transmutation, and power generation.
The plan centers on ADANES, an accelerator-driven advanced nuclear energy system, which uses a 'triple-driving' model to combine raw data processing, physics-based modeling, and expert knowledge. This technology has been in development since the 2010s and is expected to improve fuel cycle management and reduce radioactive waste.
CAS also announced the formation of the AI for ADANES Alliance, a coalition that brings together research institutes, nuclear enterprises, AI companies, and financial institutions to support the initiative. The strategic cooperation between CAS and China General Nuclear (CGN) has been ongoing since March 2016, laying the groundwork for this project.
