CFTC Charts Course on Crypto, AI, and Prediction Markets
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has kicked off its first Innovation Advisory Committee meeting, focusing on how crypto, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets can shape U.S. finance.
CFTC Chairman Michael Selig emphasized the need for clearer rules to stay ahead in these fast-growing markets, stating that 'we've crossed the Rubicon and are standing at a new frontier of finance.' He noted that the agency oversees half of the world's $1.2 quadrillion derivatives market.
The meeting brought together executives from companies like Ripple, Coinbase, Uniswap, and CME Group to discuss potential regulatory frameworks for crypto, AI, and prediction markets. Selig expressed hope that Congress will pass the CLARITY Act, which would provide clearer rules for digital assets.
If the bill stalls, the CFTC plans to use its existing powers to build rules for crypto markets, including allowing crypto exchanges to become registered digital asset markets and offering leveraged or margined trading under CFTC oversight. The agency is also exploring rules for onchain finance protocols and updating regulations for event contracts, including stronger consumer protections.
