CFTC Kicks Off Crypto Innovation Meeting Amid Calls for Clarity
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has kicked off its inaugural Innovation Advisory Committee meeting in Washington, D.C. to discuss how crypto, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets will reshape finance.
Chairman Michael Selig emphasized the importance of clearer rules for these fast-growing markets, stating that the U.S. must stay ahead in this new frontier of finance.
The meeting brought together executives from companies including Ripple, Coinbase, Uniswap, and CME Group. Selig noted that the CFTC currently oversees about half of the world's $1.2 quadrillion derivatives market.
The agency plans to use its existing powers to build rules for crypto markets if the CLARITY Act stalls in Congress, including exploring registration of exchanges as registered digital asset markets and offering leveraged or margined trading under CFTC oversight.
