CFTC Prepares to Regulate Crypto Without CLARITY Bill
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) will hold a meeting on August 20 to explore cryptocurrency regulations, despite the lack of Congressional action. The agency's Innovation Advisory Committee will discuss potential regulatory approaches for crypto assets, AI, and prediction markets.
The CFTC announcement follows a similar notice from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which plans to meet on Friday to discuss new rules for investment contracts involving crypto assets. The SEC has indicated that it will support Congressional efforts to pass a market structure bill but will work within its authority to advance crypto regulation until such legislation is passed.
The CFTC's meeting comes as the agency operates without a full panel of five bipartisan commissioners, with only one Senate-confirmed commissioner and chair, Michael Selig. The absence of leadership positions has led lawmakers to call for action from President Donald Trump.
