CFTC Seeks Comment on Compute Derivatives Contracts Amid AI Race
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has taken a significant step towards regulating the compute market, which is crucial for the development of artificial intelligence. On August 19, the agency announced that it is seeking public comment on derivatives contracts related to computing power.
CFTC Chairman Michael Selig emphasized the importance of establishing clear rules for compute markets, stating that 'America cannot win the AI race without a robust derivatives market for compute.' He compared compute to industrial-era commodities and described it as a key component of the intelligence economy.
Comments on the proposed regulations will be accepted for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register. The CFTC has invited feedback from all stakeholders, covering aspects such as manipulation concerns, customer protection, and perpetual compute futures.
The introduction of derivatives contracts is expected to impact cryptocurrency firms that sell computing capacity. Several public miners have already shifted their focus towards AI hosting revenue.
