CFTC Slams UBS with $8 Million Fine for AML Transaction Monitoring Failures
US financial regulator CFTC has fined UBS $8 million for inadequate anti-money laundering (AML) transaction monitoring systems. The lapses centered on foreign-currency wire transfers, a common vector for illicit fund movement.
The CFTC found that UBS failed to properly supervise its AML transaction monitoring systems, specifically when it came to foreign-currency wire transfers. Cross-border currency movements are a classic weak point in compliance programs because they can be harder to trace and easier to disguise.
UBS is now required to enhance its AML compliance frameworks in direct response to the CFTC's findings. This means the bank has to tighten the very systems that were flagged as deficient, rather than simply absorbing the financial penalty and moving on.
