CFTC Sounds Alarm on Crypto ATMs: 'Immediate, Irreversible Transfers'
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued a consumer advisory warning about the risks associated with cryptocurrency ATMs. These cash-to-crypto machines have been popping up in gas stations, convenience stores, and strip malls across the country.
The core concern is that these kiosks convert cash into crypto and facilitate immediate, irreversible transfers that can obscure the identities of the people on the other end of a transaction.
The FBI recorded roughly 11,000 complaints tied to crypto kiosks in 2024, totaling approximately $247 million in reported losses. This represented a 99% increase from the prior year, meaning the problem essentially doubled in twelve months.
