Chainalysis-Led Sting Cracks Global Child Exploitation Networks

Operation Lighthouse was a global sting led by blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis to target child exploitation networks that use cryptocurrency. The operation, headquartered at the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance in New York, partnered with law enforcement agencies worldwide, including Europol, the Australian Federal Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the UK's National Crime Agency.

Investigators examined over 29,000 cryptocurrency addresses and digital identifiers, generating more than 14,000 investigative leads. This operation highlighted the growing problem of child exploitation networks relying on cryptocurrency to move payments, which blockchain tracing is increasingly able to cut through.

Crypto businesses like Binance and Coinbase contributed to the effort, alongside nonprofit specialists such as the Internet Watch Foundation. According to Gavin Sather, senior program manager for anti-child sexual exploitation at Binance, 'The inherent transparency of blockchain makes it difficult for criminals to hide for long while exploiting victims.'
