Chime Joins Stablecoin Effort as Neobank Eyes Integration
Chime Financial is exploring stablecoins for integration into its app as part of the Open Standard consortium, which backs the proposed dollar-backed stablecoin Open USD. The company has joined over 140 partners, including Visa, Mastercard, and Coinbase, to develop a neutral infrastructure layer for payments and financial transactions.
The consortium unveiled Open USD on June 30, 2026, targeting payments and money movement rather than speculative crypto trading. Chime wants to be clear that it does not currently offer stablecoins or any crypto assets to its users, despite its participation in the project.
Chime's CEO has acknowledged a lack of immediate consumer demand for stablecoins among the company's user base. The company launched Chime Invest, a commission-free trading platform for stocks and ETFs, in July 2026, but did not include digital asset trading in that launch.
