China Business Journal Warns on Bitcoin-Linked Extortion Schemes
China Business Journal has sounded an alarm on extortion attempts by impersonators who claim to have uncovered damaging information about companies. The scammers allegedly sent emails from addresses outside the publication's official corporate system, demanding Bitcoin payments to prevent the 'publication' of the supposed findings.
The newspaper stressed that it follows legal requirements and official channels for reporting and source contact, and that any requests for payment in Bitcoin are a clear sign of impersonation rather than legitimate journalistic outreach. Companies receiving similar messages were advised not to transfer funds and to report the matter to local police.
China Business Journal is monitoring the incidents, collecting evidence, and reserving the right to pursue civil and criminal liability.
