China's Digital Yuan Network Expands to 30 Institutions with New Bank Additions
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) has expanded its digital yuan network by adding eight new financial institutions, bringing the total number to 30. The new additions include Ping An Bank, Hengfeng Bank, China Bohai Bank, Bank of Shanghai, Bank of Hangzhou, Huishang Bank, Bank of Changsha, and Guangxi Beibu Gulf Bank.
The digital yuan, also known as e-CNY, is a central bank-issued currency that allows for real-time tracking and programmable control over transactions. This expansion aims to increase accessibility in provinces and small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) segments where traditional centralized banking had less reach.
Proponents argue that this move reinforces the state's capacity to monitor and condition economic flows, while critics see it as an aggressive expansion of financial surveillance infrastructure. The rollout of the digital yuan highlights the fundamental antithesis between central bank-issued currencies and native cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, which prioritize individual sovereignty and privacy.
