China's Export Surge Driven by AI Chip Demand
China's exports surged in July, beating forecasts as demand for AI-driven semiconductor shipments climbed. The country's chip exports jumped 117% year-over-year, while imports rose 27.5%. The trade surplus reached $112.5 billion.
The export gains kept the world's second-largest economy on track despite a year of trade shocks. However, they also highlighted the split between booming factory exports and weak domestic spending. China's economy grew 4.3% in the second quarter, its slowest pace since late 2022, while retail sales edged up just 1% in June.
The AI chip boom could have a positive impact on crypto mining hardware and GPUs, as well as broader crypto and DeFi infrastructure adoption. However, much of the value gain reflects higher prices, which mask weak domestic demand.
