Chinese AI Model GLM-5.2 Challenges US Giants at Fraction of the Cost

A Chinese AI model called GLM-5.2 has emerged as one of the top three strongest large language models worldwide, narrowing the lead held by Anthropic's Claude Mythos and OpenAI's ChatGPT at a fraction of the cost.

The open-weight system was released in mid-June by Z.ai, a Beijing developer, just days after Washington forced Anthropic to pull its Mythos and Fable systems offline. Independent testers ranked GLM-5.2 third in the world on a benchmark of real, economically valuable work, behind two Anthropic systems and ahead of every model from OpenAI and Google.

The price gap is striking: GLM-5.2 costs around $1.40 per million input tokens, compared to roughly $15 for Claude Opus 4.8. Anyone can download the model, modify it, and run it on private hardware, with a one-million-token window built for long, multistep jobs.

Z.ai's founder Tang Jie claims that genuine parity is still a year away, but others disagree. Elon Musk predicts that parity will arrive early next year, cautioning that benchmark wins do not always translate into everyday usefulness.
