Chinese AI Models Gain Ground Globally as Affordability Trumps Intelligence
Chinese AI models are gaining traction globally due to their affordability and efficiency. The latest AI models launched by startups Z.ai, Moonshot, and Alibaba have nearly reached the intelligence of frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Raffi Krikorian, chief technology officer at Mozilla, switched to Moonshot's Kimi K3 for his day-to-day activities after its launch. He praised K3 as 'snappier' than Claude Fable from San Francisco company Anthropic, which is more expensive.
U.S. companies like Coinbase are adopting Chinese AI systems to trim costs. However, the use of Chinese models has been met with frustration by some U.S. tech giants, who have accused them of 'illicit distillation' of their technologies.
