Chinese AI Models Gain Popularity in US Amid Cost Advantage
The US AI market is experiencing a shift as Americans switch to Chinese AI models due to their lower costs. San Francisco-based Raffi Krikorian, Mozilla's chief technology officer, has started using Moonshot's Kimi K3 instead of Anthropic's Claude chatbot, citing its 'snappier' performance.
Krikorian had previously used Z.ai's GLM-5.2 for routine tasks like managing his calendar and documents. He is not alone in adopting Chinese AI systems; a growing number of Americans are choosing them for their good performance at lower prices.
US cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has also started using Chinese AI models to reduce its operating costs. The popularity of Chinese AI models can be attributed to their affordability, with some costing as little as 30% less than US-based models.
