Chinese Propaganda Fuels Opposition to US Data Centers

Data centers are crucial for cloud computing, streaming, e-commerce, banking, AI, remote work, and most internet services. With over 331 data centers in California alone, and many more planned, it's hard to ignore their presence.

However, a recent surge in opposition to these facilities has raised concerns about Chinese influence and propaganda. According to the Bitcoin Policy Institute think tank, there are 'three vectors of foreign influence converging on the push to block U.S. AI data center construction.'

The report alleges that Chinese state media, a congressional-investigated nonprofit network, and foreign-billionaire dark money are working together to halt American AI data center construction. This includes claims that Sen. Bernie Sanders' event on Capitol Hill in April 2026 featured two Chinese government affiliates as panelists.

U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick (R-PA) has expressed concerns about China's interference, stating 'China knows the AI race will shape the future... We cannot let the CCP sabotage American AI dominance from inside our own borders.'
