Chip Shortage Hampers AI Cancer Research, Says Arm CEO
Arm Holdings CEO Rene Haas believes AI could help cure cancer in our lifetime. However, he says that current computational capacity is not sufficient to make it happen.
The problem lies in the chip shortage and supply constraints in the semiconductor industry. Haas described the biological modeling required for simulating how cancer interacts with DNA markers as 'too complex' for today's AI systems.
Haas expressed confidence that future hardware and modeling advances will close this gap. He mentioned that data centers will soon become Arm's largest business segment, with its AGI CPU launched in March 2026 specifically designed for AI-optimized workloads.
The impact of the chip shortage goes beyond tech; pharmaceutical companies exploring AI-driven drug discovery face significant challenges due to the lack of computational resources at scale today.
