Circle Acquires IBM Blockchain Patent Portfolio, Becomes US Leader

Circle Internet Group has significantly expanded its blockchain patent holdings by acquiring assets from IBM's portfolio.

The deal includes over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide, covering various areas such as blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations.

This acquisition positions Circle as the largest blockchain patent holder in the United States, giving it a stronger foundation for its expanding suite of onchain products and financial tools.

The company's long-term vision is to build the internet financial system, which this expanded intellectual property portfolio supports.
