Circle Acquires IBM Blockchain Patent Portfolio in Landmark Deal

Circle Internet Group has acquired IBM's blockchain patent portfolio in a move that makes it the leading US blockchain patent holder, according to a July 27 press release. The deal includes over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide.

The patents cover foundational blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations. Circle did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition, but says it strengthens its position in onchain finance infrastructure.

Sarah Wilson, Circle's general counsel and corporate secretary, said 'Intellectual property is critical to advancing our mission and expanding adoption of onchain infrastructure.'
