Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has made a significant move in the blockchain space by acquiring IBM's vast patent portfolio. The deal gives Circle access to approximately 1,000 registered patents and over 680 patent families, making it the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States.

The acquired patents cover a wide range of industries, including banking, financial services, insurance, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations. Circle plans to integrate these patents into its core businesses, including USDC, Arc, and AI-driven financial tools.

Sarah Wilson, Chief Legal Officer at Circle, stated that intellectual property is critical to expanding the adoption of on-chain infrastructure and advancing the company's mission.
