Circle Acquires Over 1,000 IBM Patents in Blockchain Infrastructure Play
Circle Internet Group has made a significant move in its pursuit of becoming an infrastructure company, acquiring nearly 1,000 patents from IBM. The deal, announced on July 27, sent CRCL shares climbing between 3.7% and over 5% during morning trading.
The patent portfolio spans foundational blockchain technology alongside banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations. Circle plans to deploy these patents across its core product lineup: USDC, the Circle Payments Network, and the Arc blockchain platform.
Sarah Wilson, Circle's General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, framed the acquisition as a strategic enhancement that will bolster the digital finance infrastructure necessary for 'Internet-native finance across global markets.'
The financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. IBM has been gradually exiting its blockchain ambitions for years, having once positioned itself as the enterprise blockchain company before quietly scaling back.
