Circle Acquires Significant Blockchain Patent Portfolio from IBM
Circle, the company behind the stablecoin USDC, has acquired a significant portfolio of blockchain patents from IBM. The acquisition includes over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide, making Circle the leading U.S. holder of blockchain patents.
The patents cover various areas, including blockchain fundamentals, banking, finance, insurance, corporate infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations. This acquisition is a key step in strengthening Circle's intellectual property foundation as it expands its financial infrastructure business.
Circle has been expanding its business beyond issuing USDC, with initiatives such as the Circle Payments Network (CPN), which enables international payments using stablecoins, and Arc, a layer 1 blockchain for financial applications. The company also announced plans to leverage the acquired patents in building its Internet Financial System, including products like its agent-based financial tools.
Circle's CEO, Sarah Wilson, commented on the acquisition, stating that intellectual property is crucial for realizing their mission and expanding on-chain infrastructure adoption. She added that IBM's reputation as a leader in technological innovation makes this acquisition even more significant.
