Circle Buys IBM Blockchain Patents to Secure Stablecoin Dominance
Circle, the company behind the USDC stablecoin, made headlines on July 27, 2026, when it acquired over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide from IBM's blockchain patent portfolio.
The acquisition makes Circle the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States, according to The Block. This move is significant as it gives Circle control over key infrastructure that supports its USDC stablecoin, as well as the Circle Payments Network and Arc.
IBM spent years building a comprehensive patent portfolio related to enterprise-grade blockchain components, including consensus orchestration, interoperability, data privacy on shared ledgers, identity modules, and tokenization mechanics. This acquisition is seen as a strategic move by Circle to strengthen its position in the stablecoin market and provide a competitive edge.
The impact of this acquisition is not limited to Circle's own products but also has implications for the broader industry. With a large portfolio of patents at its disposal, Circle can now license its IP to other companies, create partnerships, or even defend against potential litigation.
