Circle Expands Cross-Chain Protocol to Support EURC Transfers
Circle's Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) has expanded its capabilities to support transfers of the euro-backed stablecoin EURC between Ethereum and Base, starting September 2. This marks a significant milestone for the protocol, which had previously only supported USDC.
The addition of EURC allows developers to work with two company-issued stablecoins through a single integration, without requiring changes to existing transfer models. Tokens are destroyed on the originating chain and freshly issued on the destination chain, ensuring recipients hold native EURC rather than a wrapped token.
Circle emphasized that CCTP is non-custodial and does not hold or manage assets moving through the protocol. However, transfers are irreversible, including when funds are sent to an incorrect address. This limitation remains relevant as applications integrate the new EURC route.
