Circle Internet's Stock Slides on Disappointing Stablecoin Launch
Circle Internet's stock is plummeting 5.2% in morning trading to $90.60, following Monday's sharp rally. The company's newly introduced cirBTC wrapped Bitcoin token has seen a disappointing launch, with only 40 tokens in circulation despite having over 42.5 Bitcoin reserves across 14 addresses at more than 106% coverage.
This is in stark contrast to established competitors WBTC and Coinbase's cbBTC, which dominate the Ethereum wrapped Bitcoin market with larger supplies and mature trading ecosystems. A lingering competitive threat from major banks evaluating their own stablecoins continues to weigh on sentiment, as they pose a direct threat to Circle's core USDC franchise.
The broader stablecoin competitive landscape remains intense, with a consortium-backed rival token supported by major payment networks and technology firms having entered the market earlier this summer. The challenging macro backdrop of a declining NASDAQ and S&P 500 is also putting pressure on high-beta, crypto-linked equities like CRCL.
