Circle Introduces Neutral Wrapped Bitcoin with Real-Time Reserve Verification
Circle has introduced cirBTC, an institutional-grade wrapped Bitcoin product that aims to redefine neutrality in onchain markets. CirBTC is designed to address long-standing concerns around existing wrapped Bitcoin infrastructure by eliminating conflicts of interest and enhancing trust for institutional participants.
Wrapped Bitcoin allows BTC liquidity to flow into smart contract environments like Ethereum, enabling its use in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications such as lending, trading, and collateral systems. However, the current wrapped Bitcoin market is often criticized for governance complexity, dependency on centralized issuers, and strategic conflicts of interest.
CirBTC's transparent reserve model ensures each token is backed 1:1 by native Bitcoin, held in custody by Circle National Trust, a federally chartered institution supervised by the OCC. Circle employs Chainlink's Proof of Reserve system for real-time, onchain verification of reserves, moving away from the traditional less frequent attestation model.
