Circle Lands Largest US Blockchain Patent Portfolio with IBM Deal
Circle has acquired nearly 1,000 blockchain patents from IBM, expanding its intellectual property portfolio to become the largest in the United States. The purchase includes over 680 patent families and covers a range of areas such as blockchain systems, financial services, banking, insurance, and enterprise infrastructure.
The acquisition is seen as a strategic move by Circle to support its USDC stablecoin, Arc blockchain, and other products. General Counsel Sarah Wilson stated that the intellectual property will aid in advancing Circle's mission and expanding adoption of onchain infrastructure.
However, concerns have been raised about how Circle plans to use the patents, with some questioning whether they could become a means to exert legal pressure on competitors or startups. IBM's mixed record in commercial blockchain development has also contributed to these worries.
