Circle Locks In Coinbase Deal Through 2029 Amid Focus on AI-Driven Activity

Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, has renewed its commercial agreement with Coinbase through 2029. The deal makes Coinbase the central distribution partner for USDC across retail and institutional platforms.

This move is significant as it removes one major source of uncertainty for investors. The renewal also comes at a time when Circle's core distribution economics have been under scrutiny, particularly the fee structure that sees Coinbase taking more than half of Circle's USDC reserve revenue.

Circle has also reaffirmed its focus on AI-driven activity through its Agent Stack platform, which already supports over 900 paid services and accounts for 99.3% of payment volume moving through the x402 machine-payment protocol.

The company's Chief Financial Officer Jeremy Fox-Geen stated that Circle would rather maintain a healthy balance sheet than return capital to USDC holders through routine shareholder distributions, prioritizing reinvestment in infrastructure over near-term yield.
