Circle Secures New York Trust Charter Amid Crypto Market Weakness
Circle Internet Group (CRCL) secured a limited-purpose trust charter from the New York Department of Financial Services, marking a significant regulatory milestone for the USDC issuer. The charter complements Circle's earlier approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), which allows the company to operate a federally chartered trust bank responsible for custodying reserves backing the stablecoin.
Jeremy Allaire, Co-Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Circle, stated that earning a New York trust charter has been a longstanding objective for the company, providing regulatory clarity given its global headquarters are also located in New York. The new charter creates a two-tier structure where Circle New York Trust issues USDC while Circle National Trust safeguards the reserves backing the stablecoin.
Despite this achievement, CRCL stock fell 1.6% in pre-market trade on Friday, coinciding with weakness in the cryptocurrency market and Bitcoin's price drop to under $64,000. Coinbase (COIN), a USDC partner of Circle, also reported second-quarter earnings that missed Wall Street's expectations.
