Circle Secures New York Trust Charter Amid Expansion Efforts
Circle, the USDC stablecoin issuer, has received a limited-purpose trust charter from the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). This approval allows Circle to operate a New York trust company that can provide digital asset custody services. However, unlike a traditional bank, it cannot accept deposits or make loans.
The charter builds on Circle's existing BitLicense, which it received in 2015. The company says this is an important milestone for its expansion efforts.
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire stated that earning the trust charter has been a longstanding objective for the company. He believes that this approval positions USDC within a strong and respected framework as digital dollars become central to the global financial system.
The limited-purpose trust company will operate under the supervision of the NYDFS. It can provide services such as holding digital assets on behalf of customers and acting in a fiduciary role under New York banking law.
