Circle Secures Patent Portfolio, Boosts Regulatory Standing
Circle Internet Group (CRCL) shares rose 3.4% this week after acquiring IBM's blockchain patent portfolio, which includes over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide.
The deal makes Circle the leading blockchain patent holder in the United States, a significant strategic upgrade for a company built around its dollar-backed stablecoin, USDC.
Circle issues USDC and earns revenue mainly from interest on those reserves, which are tied to stablecoin adoption and prevailing interest rates. The acquisition follows another major regulatory win earlier this month when Circle secured final approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish a national trust bank charter.
This approval lets Circle custody USDC reserves directly under federal oversight, rather than relying entirely on third-party banking partners. The company has also been expanding its institutional rails this year through partnerships with Standard Chartered, BNY, and Nomura, aimed at making USDC easier for large financial institutions to mint, redeem, and custody.
The IBM patent deal could open new revenue avenues for Circle, as the company may license portions of that portfolio to other blockchain companies. The patent portfolio also gives Circle a layered defense against competitors lacking either regulatory standing or intellectual property base.
