Circle has acquired IBM's extensive blockchain patent portfolio in a bid to strengthen its USDC infrastructure. The portfolio, which comprises over 500 patents filed between 2018 and 2019, includes intellectual property related to consensus mechanisms and enterprise supply chain solutions.

The acquisition is designed to fortify Circle's position in the digital asset ecosystem and protect it from potential patent litigation threats. To mitigate this risk, Circle has been a member of the LOT Network since 2023 and 2025, which provides a collaborative defensive patent initiative for its members.

Circle already holds a patent for parallel block processing, granted in December 2023, which enables faster transaction throughput by processing multiple blocks simultaneously. The company's move to acquire IBM's patent portfolio underscores its commitment to developing robust blockchain technology and expanding its market presence.
