Circle Stock Rallies on Chelsea Deal, but Faces New Stablecoin Competition
Circle's stock surged to nearly $96 on August 27 after the company announced a major sponsorship agreement with Chelsea Football Club. The deal, which will see Circle and USDC branding on Chelsea shirts during the 2026/27 season, marked a significant milestone for the firm.
The partnership, which covers Chelsea's men's, women's, and academy teams, is expected to give USDC visibility across several Chelsea teams rather than just the men's first team. This broad placement expands the number of competitions and audiences carrying the Circle brand.
Circle Chief Executive Jeremy Allaire described the partnership as connecting USDC with a global sports audience, while Chelsea President Jason Gannon said it aligns with the club's focus on digital development.
However, despite Thursday's recovery, CRCL stock fell 1.55% in premarket hours on Friday, erasing part of the previous session's rebound and returning shares below Thursday's closing price. The decline came as reports highlighted renewed interest from major banks in proprietary stablecoins, which could pose direct competition to USDC circulation.
