Circle Storms Blockchain Patent Landscape with IBM Acquisition

Circle Internet Group has made a significant move in the patent acquisition space by purchasing over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents from IBM. This deal was announced on July 27 and sent Circle's stock shares climbing between 3.7% and 5% during morning trading.

The acquired patent portfolio spans foundational blockchain technology alongside banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations. Circle plans to deploy these patents across its core product lineup: USDC, the Circle Payments Network, and the Arc blockchain platform.

Sarah Wilson, Circle's General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, framed the acquisition as a strategic enhancement that will bolster the digital finance infrastructure necessary for 'Internet-native finance across global markets.'

The financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. IBM has been gradually exiting its blockchain ambitions for years, having once positioned itself as the enterprise blockchain company before quietly scaling back.

Circle's stock needs this boost, with shares sitting at a nearly 20% year-to-date decline and a staggering 66% drop over the past year. The regulatory landscape has shifted meaningfully, with the 2025 GENIUS Act bringing clearer rules for stablecoin issuers but also inviting competition.

Owning nearly 1,000 patents across blockchain and financial services technology gives Circle something its newer competitors largely lack: deep intellectual property that predates the current rush.
