Circle Warns of Quantum Threat to USDC Blockchain Signatures
USDC (USD Coin), a stablecoin managed by Circle, is facing a quantum computing threat. A recent record of 813 logical qubits demonstrates that quantum circuits needed to attack widely used blockchain signatures are becoming more efficient.
Circle has warned developers to prepare for the migration to post-quantum cryptography, which will involve key rotation and updates to wallets and custodians. The company cannot protect its customers' private keys or change the signature rules of other blockchains like Ethereum, Solana, or XRPL on its own.
The quantum threat is not imminent, but Circle advises developers to act now. They should inventory their cryptography, identify vendor dependencies, and prepare for key rotation. The migration will secure Circle's own keys while leaving old wallets and bridges exposed, which would undermine the entire effort.
