Circle's CirBTC Aims to Set New Standard for Wrapped Bitcoin Neutrality
The digital asset market has seen the rise of several forms of tokenized Bitcoin, but existing wrapped BTC options fall short for institutions. Circle's Wrapped Bitcoin (cirBTC) is designed to address these roadblocks and provide a neutral infrastructure for institutional markets.
CirBTC is backed 1:1 by native Bitcoin, held in custody by Circle's Bermuda affiliate and the Circle National Trust, a federally chartered national trust bank and qualified custodian. The wrapper uses Chainlink Proof of Reserve to verify reserves with onchain data in real time, and multi-address transparency allows counterparties to verify BTC holdings through block explorers.
The goal is not to compete for trading flows or replace existing venues, but to provide a neutral collateral infrastructure that can work across them. CirBTC is positioned to become a cornerstone collateral asset for borrowing, lending, trading, and settlement activity on the Ethereum blockchain and Circle's Arc platform.
